Monte Cristo sandwiches have lots of variations, but there are a few similarities.

Monte Cristo sandwiches have ham and cheese (either gruyere or provolone). For condiments, the bread is normally spread with mustard and mayonnaise.

After the sandwiches are assembled, they’re then dipped in beaten eggs and cooked in a pan, sort of like French toast.

The sandwiches are then served with a side of raspberry or black raspberry jam for dipping. Yum!

Full Monte

When made with good whiskey, high-quality vermouth and bitters, the Manhattan is an unimpeachable classic, revered by drinkers since it first appeared at New York City’s Manhattan Club around 1880. Like many old-school winners, the cocktail has resulted in many twists. But one of those variations simply flips the typical 2:1 whiskey-to-vermouth ratio on its head, giving vermouth the spotlight.

When you swap the ingredients in a Manhattan, “the other component shines through, and it unveils a more rich, aromatic and almost spicy component,” says Jenelle Engleson, a beverage director and sommelier in Nashville. She skips vermouth entirely in her Full Monte cocktail, choosing instead to pair rye whiskey with Amaro Montenegro. This Italian liqueur dates back to 1885 and is made from a secret blend of 40 botanicals, which coalesce into a predominate flavor of orange peels, florals and spice.

Engleson appreciates Amaro Montenegro’s relatively low 23% ABV and its spicy profile, finding that it creates a balanced Manhattan variation that is as breezy to make as it is to drink. Given the rise of amari at bars around the world, and drinkers collectively acquiring a taste for digestifs, the Full Monte is a friendly option that will fall right into the comfort zone for many stirred-cocktail aficionados.

The Reverse Manhattan (and similar drinks that dial up the vermouth or amaro while dialing down the full-proof spirit) isn’t a new concept. This approach was common in the 19th-century when vermouth featured prominently in drinks, including in the Manhattan, whose formula leaned heavier on the vermouth than today’s recipe. The Full Monte gives a nod to that tradition while establishing its own flavorful identity.

Classic Monte Cristo Sandwich

This Monte Cristo sandwich is a classic French toast-style sandwich. Now you don't have to wait for a trip to a local diner to get your craving fulfilled. You can make your own! The sandwich filling is a combination of sliced ham, turkey or chicken, and cheese, along with mustard or mayonnaise. The assembled sandwich is battered in an egg mixture and then it's browned on both sides.

You can use sliced, boiled or baked deli ham and turkey or leftover sliced ham in the sandwich. While the classic cheese is gruyere or Swiss, feel free to try other favorites such as Havarti cheese. The bread should be a sturdier sandwich bread with even slices and same sized pieces. Pre-sliced white bread will work, just don't overfill your sandwich. Choose whatever mustard you like best. Dijon is, of course, the classic for this sandwich, but you could opt for a grainer mustard, honey mustard, or any combination of mustards.

For a more complete meal, serve this sandwich with a cup of tomato soup or a fresh, bright green salad. You'll want a slightly acidic dressing to balance the richness of the sandwich. Or serve the sandwich as is or alongside a handful of potato chips. If you have leftover sandwiches, wrap them tightly in aluminum foil and store in the refrigerator. The Monte Cristo can be reheated in a warm oven (be sure to place it on a baking sheet since the cheese will likely melt and drip) or in a hot pan on the stove. ​

Disneyland Shared The Recipe For Its Famous Monte Cristo Sandwich That's Been On The Menu Since 1967

Arguably, some of the Disney parks' most famous food are the delicious things you can grab and eat while taking in the fireworks, walking to your next ride, or just generally hanging around all your favorite characters. I'm talking about Dole whip, churro bites, and that ooey gooey grilled cheese. But some of the most incredible meals are actually found at Disney's sit-down restaurants, such as this iconic Monte Cristo sandwich. And now, you can make one for yourself.

The sandwich is on the menu at Disneyland's Blue Bayou restaurant and has been for 50 years, according to D23, the official fan club of Disney. If you've never had one, a Monte Cristo sandwich is sort of like a sweet and savory, deep-fried grilled cheese with ham and turkey on it. The sandwich was on the original menu in 1967 and upwards of 200 of these sandwiches are served per day when the park is open.

But since the park is currently closed, if you're craving one of these guys, you'll have to make one in your own home kitchen, and thanks to SimpleMost, we discovered that D23 shared the original recipe. In fact, the recipe was so highly requested that Disneyland used to hand out recipe cards.

Technically, D23 shared two different recipes&mdashone that was on the vintage recipe card, and another that seems to be in use today. You can really take your pick as to which you want, as the recipe card instructions are a little simpler (using white bread and a little less flour), while the written recipe will result in a richer sandwich (it uses challah bread, YUM).

No matter which you choose, be sure you have ingredients like ham, turkey, swiss cheese, canola oil, and powdered sugar on hand. Oh, and you're going to want to have blackberry preserves handy to dip it in. trust me. You can find the recipes for this delicious sandwich here. Happy eating!

Recipe Summary

  • 2 onions, peeled
  • ½ pound ground beef
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 (8 ounce) container plain yogurt

Combine the flour and salt in a mixing bowl. Add the eggs and water, mixing well with your hands. Add more water, if needed, to form a soft dough. Cover and set aside for at least 30 minutes.

Shred the onions and place them in a colander or sieve set over a bowl drain the juice and discard. Combine the onion, ground beef, salt, and pepper mix the meat well with a spoon until mashed.

Divide the dough into two portions and lightly flour a work surface. Keep one piece of dough covered while you roll out the second portion into a rectangle, rolling the dough as thin as you can. Cut the rectangle into 2-inch squares with a knife or pastry wheel.

Place about 2 teaspoons of the meat filling in the center of each square. Seal the dumplings by gathering the edges of the dough and pinching them together at the top to form a bundle. Transfer the finished manti to a floured plate, and sprinkle more flour over the manti to prevent sticking. Repeat with the second piece of dough.

Heat the oil and red pepper flakes in a small skillet over low heat just until the pepper flakes have started to color the oil don't let them burn. Remove from the heat and keep warm. Stir the minced garlic into the yogurt and set aside.

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over medium-high heat, and cook the manti until the filling is no longer pink, and the dough is tender, 20 to 25 minutes. Drain well. Divide the manti among four plates. Spoon the yogurt sauce over the manti and drizzle each serving with the hot pepper oil.

Blue Bayou’s Monte Cristo Sandwich

1 egg
1 3/4 cups plus 2 tablespoons water
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
8 slices egg bread (challah works well), sliced 1/2-inch thick
8 thin slices ham
8 thin slices turkey
8 thin slices Swiss cheese
3 cups canola oil
Confectioners’ sugar
Blackberry preserves

Line a cookie sheet with paper towels set aside. Whisk the egg and water together in a mixing bowl. Add flour, salt, and baking powder and whisk thoroughly for 2 to 3 minutes or until smooth, scraping sides of bowl. On one slice of bread, arrange two slices of ham, turkey, and cheese, covering the bread evenly. Place another slice of bread on top and slice each sandwich in half diagonally.

Heat oil to between 365 and 375 degrees Fahrenheit in a 10-inch pan. Do not let the oil reach a higher temperature than this if the oil starts to smoke, turn the heat down. Dip half of the sandwich into the batter, allowing excess to drain, and very carefully place into the oil. Repeat with the other sandwich half. Cook 3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Place the cooked sandwich on the prepared cookie sheet in a warm oven until ready to serve. Repeat with the other three sandwiches.

Cook one at a time, and allow the oil to reach the desired temperature between each. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar and serve with blackberry preserves on the side.

Honestly, it’s so good we won’t blame you if you serve it for dinner too. With the sweet toppings and delicious filling it’s sure to be a favorite with kids and adults alike. Plus, it’s a nice change to typical breakfast recipes.

What is a Monte Cristo Sandwich?

A traditional Monte Cristo Sandwich is like a combination of a delicious ham and grilled cheese sandwich, and French Toast. This classic French dish is a simple ham and cheese sandwich that’s then dipped in an egg custard and grilled. The delicious grilled sandwich is then served with sugar and jelly if desired. It’s the perfect combination of savory meat, melty cheese, and sweet toppings. This casserole takes all of that and makes it easy to bake for a crowd.


This delicious casserole is a new take on a classic Monte Cristo, however it’s layered with the same delicious ingredients. Here’s how to make sure you get all the taste in every bite:

  1. Start by spraying your casserole dish with cooking spray. Lay half your bread in a single layer across the bottom. You may have to cut some of the slices to fit properly.
  2. Next add the sandwich filling. That is, the turkey, ham, and Swiss cheese.
  3. Put the rest of the bread (or top of the sandwich) in a layer over the filling.
  4. Whisk together the eggs, milk, dijon mustard, sugar, salt and pepper for the custard. This is typically what you’d dip each sandwich in, but for this casserole you just pour it over the top.
  5. Mash together the butter, flour and brown sugar. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the sandwich casserole. Put your casserole in the oven, and enjoy!
